METHODS FOR REMOVING GUM FROM CONCRETE

The best methods for removing chewing gum from concrete depends on the gum’s age and level of penetration into the concrete surface. If the chewing gum was left recently and it hasn’t penetrated the surface yet, we are sometimes able to remove it by covering it with ice until it freezes, then scraping it off with a metal putty knife.

The ice forces the gum to freeze into a more forgiving substance compared to a warm and sticky glob. Once the chewing gum is frozen, we slide a metal putty knife or scraper under the gum. Then we move the scraper slowly beneath the gum and the entire piece should peel right off of the concrete.

The above method is only possible with gum that is brand new.

When we remove chewing gum that has turned black, or is already smashed deep down into the concrete surface, we use a hot water pressure washer with the heat dialed up to 200 Degrees to melt the gum. For this type of gum removal, we do not use high pressure because that might ruin the surface of the concrete!

Our pressure washers never uses any more pressure than needed to safely clean commercial concrete. These types of surfaces can be destroyed a lot easier than most people think, especially if they’re only a couple of years old. Concrete can need up to 100 years to cure. That is why we always use hot water and the least amount of pressure possible for our professional chewing gum removal professional.
